SLANG

I created Swedish Language Games (SLANG) to make practicing the language with my classmates more fun. The app is a set of non-competitive minigames made for a group of 1-4 people: by taking turns each person tries their best at the given challenge with help and encouragement from the team.

SLANG v0.01 (95.5 Mb, Windows x64)

Extract the zip file and start SLANG.exe.

On start it’s in touch screen mode so for now you have to press M to show the mouse cursor.

The settings and the cached dictionary is saved to the C:\Users\…\AppData\Local\SLANG folder.

The application is obviously in a very early stage of development with only two minigames and more than two bugs.

The dictionary is based on the Kelly list which contains the ~8000 most frequent words. The translations are mostly from Folkets dictionary, word metadata is mostly from the extra materials for the Rivstart textbooks. The datasets required a lot of manual fixes and additions along with a meaty python script so expect a non zero number of mistakes in the dictionary. If you find any (or other bugs) then please do let me know. Thanks! 🙂

Dictionary filtering

On this screen one can narrow down the list of words used in the minigames. If a word passes any of the enabled filters then it will be included.

Custom Collection
It’s purpose is to select a user defined collection of words. Right now however only #1 has any words in it, the ones we covered with my Swedish class. In a later update it will be possible to load a text file containing the words.

CEFR
A range of Common European Framework levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2

Rivstart
A range of CEFR and chapter values. At this time C1 and C2 can’t be selected.

Letter Shuffle

In this game one has to guess the word. The letters are mixed up except for the first one. There are 3 possible hints, word class, inflections and translation but many words are missing one or more of those metadata. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sentence Maker

Here the task is to create a sentence of a given type (question, command or any) using the two words and a topic.
